OPEN CALL: Textiel Biënnale 2025 - Verweven Toekomsten: Utopia/Dystopia in Textiel
Museum Rijswijk nodigt textielkunstenaars wereldwijd uit om deel te nemen aan de Textiel Biënnale 2025 met het thema Utopia / Dystopia. Utopieën vertegenwoordigen de ideale wereld, perfecte samenlevingen waar we van dromen, vol harmonie, innovatie, en esthetische schoonheid. Daartegenover staan dystopieën, die de donkere kanten van menselijke samenlevingen belichten: onderdrukking, verval, en chaos. Hoe kunnen deze contrasterende visies worden verbeeld en beleefd door middel van en met textiel?
Utopieën (en dystopieën) spreken al eeuwen tot de verbeelding. Het woord “utopie” werd voor het eerst gebruikt in het boek Utopia van Thomas More, dat uitkwam in 1516. Daarin beschrijft hij, uit onvrede met de politiek in het toenmalige Engeland, een ‘ideale samenleving’ op het fictieve eiland Utopia, waarin iedereen gelijk is en privébezit niet bestaat. In de loop van de eeuwen hebben vele andere denkers over utopieën geschreven zoals Francis Bacon’s New Atlantis (1624) en Ernest Callenbach’s boek Ecotopia (1975).
Het bereiken van een ideale wereld blijkt niet eenvoudig, getuigt de dystopische literatuur. De fictieve dystopische gemeenschappen houden verband met cataclysmische achteruitgang in de samenleving en worden gekenmerkt door milieurampen, oorlogen en epidemieën die ruimte bieden voor tirannieke regimes met onderdrukkende maatschappelijke controle.
We zijn op zoek naar inzendingen, die utopische idealen en dystopische waarschuwingen in textiel verkennen. Dat kunnen figuratieve of abstracte uitingen in diverse textiele materialen zijn. Kunstenaars die onderzoeken hoe utopische en dystopische visies verschillende culturen door de eeuwen heen hebben beïnvloed.
Het aanbieden van nieuwe ideeën en oplossingen voor hedendaagse problemen zoals duurzaamheid in textielproductie, of juist waarschuwen voor de gevaren van huidige praktijken. Kunstenaars die reflecteren op huidige maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen en komen met mogelijke toekomstscenario's, die inspireren en tot discussies en nieuwe inzichten leiden.
Aanmelding: kunstenaars kunnen hun werk indienen tot 1 oktober 2024. Selecteer uw meest inspirerende en relevante werken die passen binnen het thema en dienen als een krachtige uitdrukking van utopische en dystopische ideeën.
De Textiel Biënnale 2025 Verweven Toekomsten vindt plaats van 22 juni tot en met 16 november 2025 en we volgen de BKNL richtlijnen voor kunstenaarshonoraria.

OPEN CALL: Textile Biennial 2025 - Interwoven Futures: Utopia/Dystopia in Textile
Museum Rijswijk invites textile artists worldwide to participate in the Textile Biennial 2025 with the theme Utopia / Dystopia. Utopias represent the ideal world, perfect societies we dream of, full of harmony, innovation, and aesthetic beauty. In contrast, dystopias highlight the dark sides of human societies: oppression, decay, and chaos. How can these contrasting visions be depicted and experienced through and with textiles?
Utopias (and dystopias) have captured the imagination for centuries. The word “utopia” was first used in Thomas More's book Utopia, which was published in 1516. Out of dissatisfaction with politics in England at the time More describes an 'ideal society' on the fictional island of Utopia, in which everyone is equal and private property does not exist. Over the centuries, many other thinkers have written about utopias, such as Francis Bacon's New Atlantis (1624) and Ernest Callenbach's book Ecotopia (1975).
Achieving an ideal world is not easy, as dystopian literature testifies. The fictional dystopian communities involve cataclysmic decline in society and are characterized by environmental disasters, wars and epidemics that provide space for tyrannical regimes with oppressive societal control.
We are looking for submissions that explore utopian ideals and dystopian warnings in textiles. These can be figurative or abstract expressions in various textile materials. Artists who explore how utopian and dystopian visions have influenced different cultures throughout the centuries. Offering new ideas and solutions to contemporary problems such as sustainability in textile production, or warning about the dangers of current practices. Artists who reflect on current social developments and offer possible future scenarios, that inspire and lead to discussions and new insights.
Application: Artists can submit their work until October 1, 2024. Select your most inspiring and relevant work(s) that fit within the theme and serve as a powerful expression of utopian and dystopian ideas.
The Textile Biennial 2025 Interwoven Futures will take place from June 22 to November 16, 2025 and we follow the BKNL guidelines for artist fees.
